About Parc Natural de la Serra de Collserola

Parc Natural de la Serra de Collserola is a protected natural park located in the Catalan Coastal Range, predominantly within the metropolitan area of Barcelona, Spain. Covering an area of approximately 8,000 hectares, it is one of the largest metropolitan natural parks globally and serves as an important green lung for the densely populated urban surroundings. The park's geography features rolling hills, Mediterranean forests dominated by pine, oak, and cork oak, and a network of streams and valleys that support diverse flora and fauna. It offers sanctuary to wildlife such as wild boar, foxes, and numerous bird species including the Eurasian jay and Bonelli’s eagle. The park was officially declared a natural park in 1987 to preserve its unique biodiversity and prevent urban sprawl. Key landmarks include the iconic Torre de Collserola telecommunications tower, designed by Norman Foster, and the Tibidabo summit, which houses an amusement park and a historic church, providing visitors with stunning vistas over Barcelona and the sea. Outdoor recreation is rich with over 180 kilometers of trails catering to hikers, mountain bikers, and runners. The park is also popular for bird watching, picnicking, and nature education. Its close proximity to Barcelona, combined with well-maintained paths and ample signage, makes it highly accessible. The natural park offers a rare opportunity to escape the city bustle while exploring a Mediterranean ecosystem with historical traces dating back to Roman times, including ancient farmhouses and quarries. Annual events and guided tours further enhance visitor engagement, fostering appreciation for conservation and cultural heritage.
